Guide to Continuing the #noDAPL Movement

Executive Orders given today will allow Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipelines to continue construction. Corporations can resubmit applications and the Secretary of State will reach final decision within 60 days. Investing in dirty energy despite years peaceful protest is unsettling. It shows a deep disrespect towards Native Americans and our land.
So where do we go from here?

1. UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE SUPPORT PIPELINES AND KNOW THE FACTS TO DISPUTE THEM.

  • Short-term economic growth.
Consider this pipeline for it’s prospects as a long term investment. The oil industry lost $67 billion dollars last year. Meanwhile, the renewable energy industry had a record-breaking year.

  • Temporary increase in short-term jobs during the construction phase.
The main argument for the construction of these pipelines seems to be job creation. Politifact verifies that the pipeline will only create about 35 long term jobs.

  • A race for energy independence, despite no real need.
The world’s top investors agree that this is a short sighted approach. We should try to conserve non-renewable resources, for as long as possible. Emerging markets are embracing alternative energy sources and experiencing great success.

  • They don’t know/care/believe that pipelines are dangerous.
It’s not a matter of if something will happen, but when something does happen. Pipelines can pollute water supplies of surrounding communities, which sometimes goes unnoticed. Our government’s bottom line should be safety.

To increase the effectiveness of our message, remember that staffers are our allies. Kindness is important tool.

  • Call or write to your Senator’s DC office.
  • Call or write to your Senator’s local office.
  • Attend town hall meetings
  • Organize an educational “field trip” for your Senator staffers.
  • Run for a local government position.

Take a look at the document for statements from senators in support of the pipeline. Familiarize yourself with your Senator’s opinion on pipelines. Provide staffers with fact-checked information to inform your Senator.

Pipeline supporters tend to use bombastic language to demonize concerned citizens.
They rename the concern over the long-term effects as “environmental radicalism”. Despite the fact that pipelines have proved to be disastrous.

They’ve labeled the Standing Rock Sioux tribe as “anti-energy radicles”. Despite the fact that they have been protesting peacefully since the beginning. This also disregards the fact that were not properly consulted before construction began.

Pipeline opposers recognize that this threatens our country’s access to safe drinking water.

3. DON’T GIVE UP, BUT DON’T RESIST UNTIL EXHAUSTION.

This will be a long fight. Stay committed and listen to new ideas on how to help the movement with an open mind.

The only way we can win is to work together. Be effective in educating others. And Don’t let other’s opinion affect your resolve.
